Beginners Calligraphy Course

Our introductory course has been designed for complete beginners. This fun and relaxed 2 hour LIVE workshop will equip you with all the basics to get you started on your calligraphy journey. You’ll be provided with all the kit you need and be guided through the fundamentals of modern calligraphy with an expert. We’ll send a link to join a video call hosted by an experienced calligrapher who will talk you through everything, step by step, giving live demos and feedback. The course size is limited to ensure each participant receives plenty of personalised feedback. To arrange one-to-one or group bookings please contact us.

What’s in the kit:

• A straight natural wood pen holder
• A shorthand nib
• A pot of homemade iron gall ink
• A guide sheet
• Worksheets
• Plain layout paper

What you’ll learn:

• Understand the kit
• How to prepare your nib and assemble your pen
• Learn the basic strokes (that make up the lower case alphabet)
• Understand how to connect letters to start writing words
• Learn the techniques to create good and consistent calligraphy

What else?

You’ll be invited to join the Langham Calligraphy Community. A private Facebook group for anyone who has attended one of our courses. We’d love you to continue to encourage each other on your calligraphy journey, ask questions, share your tips and progress.

Upcoming workshops - More dates coming soon

More information:

Each Beginners Course is available for a specific date. On successful purchase of the course you will be enrolled onto the course and you will receive a confirmation of your booking within 48 hours. Your date for that course is then fixed and cannot be changed without prior agreement. Due to the small group coaching provided it is not often possible to change the date when there is 10 days before the course start date, so please check your diary carefully before booking.

You will be sent a calligraphy starter pack in the post. We know you will be excited for it to arrive so that you can get started, but please bear with us and allow for packing and distribution. Each kit is lovingly packed by hand and should arrive with you 2 working days before the course start date. If you haven’t received the kit by that point then please send Claire an email to claire@langhamcalligraphy.co.uk

In the run up to the course you will receive all communications and information via email so please ensure you provide an up-to-date email address. On the day before the course you will receive a link to the course via email. All courses are held via the online meeting platform Zoom.

During the two-hour course you will be guided through the basics of modern calligraphy including how to set up and hold your pen, some simple basic techniques and tips on how to write and construct words and short phrases.

It is not intended that you will finish the course and feel completely proficient in calligraphy. This is a course for beginners so only basic techniques are taught. Each individual is unique and their starting position and commitment to the course is unique to them and as a result individual results will vary. We recommend that once you finish the course you spend time in the immediate days following the course to practice your new skills and then to keep practising regularly. The course is an introduction only and failure to continue to practice the skills taught will limit your ability any results and improvement. Whilst the numbers of participants are kept relatively small, this is not a 1:1 course.

Please be aware that the course is delivered entirely in English and no translations are provided for videos or text.
